Phase I clinical trials are typically not disease specific trials and test new treatments for safety in humans and any harmful side effects. They can be searched separately by clicking on the Phase I checkbox. (If you do not select Phase I, trials in any phase that match your other search terms will be retrieved.)
Phase II trials determine whether the new treatment is effective against specific tumors.
Phase III trials compare the result of people taking the new treatment with results of people taking standard treatment. Phase III testing occurs only when a protocol shows promise in Phases I and II.
Cancer Prevention clinical trials test whether taking certain medicines, vitamins, minerals, or food supplements may lower the risk of a certain type of cancer.
Cancer Control clinical trials test whether certain drugs reduce side effects from chemotherapy and other primary treatments.
Risks There may be risks associated with participation in a clinical trial. The consent form provides a list of possible risks but there is also a possibility of previously unknown risks occurring. Patients may experience all, some or none of the expected side effects. The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center has a data and safety committee which monitors clinical trials. Patients are kept informed about new information which becomes available about a clinical trial. Every effort is made to ensure patient safety.
Patient Rights Participation in a clinical trial is voluntary. Patients can decide not to participate or withdraw from a study at any time without penalty or loss of benefits. The rights of a patient do not change because they take part in a research study. The doctor can provide information about other treatment options.
